Understanding your treatment

About Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical way to enhance facial features, restore volume and soften the appearance of wrinkles. At Lumi SKN Clinics Kettering, treatment is tailored to your individual features, with the aim of achieving natural-looking, age-appropriate changes.

Different filler materials include hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite and poly-L-lactic acid. These products work differently and are not interchangeable. Your practitioner will explain which product is being recommended, why it is appropriate and what it may realistically achieve.

Whether you are interested in lip volume, cheek definition, jawline contouring or under-eye hollows, the first step is a detailed consultation. Your anatomy, medical history and treatment goals guide the plan, including whether filler is appropriate at all.

The treatment explained

How it works.

Product selection and placement matter. Your treatment is planned around the area being treated, your facial structure and the changes you would like to explore.

We discuss the procedure, comfort measures, recovery and possible risks before treatment.

The process behind dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are introduced beneath the skin to add volume or support selected contours. Hyaluronic acid fillers bind water and provide a filling effect.

Some other products, including calcium hydroxylapatite and poly-L-lactic acid, can also stimulate collagen. Their effects and treatment schedules differ from hyaluronic acid fillers; not every filler works in the same way.

Your treatment appointment

Treatment typically takes around 30–60 minutes, depending on the areas treated and the agreed plan. Consultation and preparation may require additional time.

Comfort measures will be discussed with you. Some fillers create an immediate change in volume, while treatments such as poly-L-lactic acid develop more gradually. Initial swelling can affect how the area looks.

How long can results last?

Duration depends on the specific product, treatment area and your individual response. The following ranges are general guides, not guarantees:

  • Hyaluronic acid: often around 6–12 months, although some products and treatment areas can last longer. More mobile areas, such as the lips, may need earlier review.
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite: often around 12–18 months, depending on the product and treatment.
  • Poly-L-lactic acid: effects develop progressively and may last up to two years following a recommended course.
  • Individual factors: your biological response, the amount used and the area treated affect the outcome and review schedule.

Your practitioner will explain the expected duration for the product in your personal treatment plan.

Which areas can be treated?
  • Lips: enhance volume, shape and definition.
  • Cheeks: address volume loss and support facial contours.
  • Tear troughs: address selected under-eye hollows where appropriate. Filler is not suitable for every under-eye concern or all causes of dark circles.
  • Jawline: refine contour and definition.
  • Nasolabial folds: soften the appearance of lines between the nose and mouth.
  • Chin: improve projection and balance facial proportions.

Each area requires an individual assessment and an appropriate product. Not every filler is suitable for every treatment area.

A plan built around you

Is Dermal Filler
Right for You?

Dermal fillers may be considered by adults seeking a non-surgical approach to changes in facial volume, lines or definition.

Suitability is not determined by age or appearance alone. Your practitioner will review your skin, medical history, allergies and expectations, and explain alternatives where appropriate.

Suitable candidates may:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Want to enhance or restore volume in areas such as the lips, cheeks or temples
  • Have visible wrinkles or lines they would like to soften
  • Prefer a non-surgical treatment and understand the recovery and risks involved
  • Want to explore jawline contouring or facial definition

Active infections, certain skin conditions or allergies to product ingredients may affect suitability. A consultation is required before any treatment is agreed.

Your individual outcome

Dermal Filler Results

The aim is a considered enhancement that complements your features. The outcome depends on your anatomy, the product used and the treatment plan.

Some changes are visible immediately, but swelling can temporarily alter the appearance. Other products work more gradually. Your practitioner will explain when to review the settled result.

Individual results vary; a specific outcome cannot be guaranteed.

Have a question?

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Explore the essentials before your consultation. Your practitioner will provide advice specific to your treatment.

How long do dermal fillers last?

Duration varies by product and treatment area. Many temporary fillers last around 6–12 months; some last longer, and poly-L-lactic acid effects may persist for up to two years following a course. Areas with more movement, such as the lips, may need earlier review.

Your practitioner will confirm the expected duration and maintenance plan for the product used.

Is the treatment painful?

Sensation varies between people and treatment areas. You may feel a pinch, pressure or temporary discomfort during injections. Topical numbing may be used, and some fillers contain lidocaine to help reduce discomfort.

Tell your practitioner about any allergies, including to local anaesthetics, before treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness can occur. These often settle over days to weeks. Infection, lumps or allergic reactions are also possible if post-session care is not taken properly.

Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel, causing tissue damage, vision loss or stroke. Your practitioner should explain these risks and provide clear aftercare and emergency contact instructions.

Seek urgent medical attention for unusual or worsening pain, pale or discoloured skin, or any vision changes after treatment.

When will I see results, and when can I return to normal activities?

Hyaluronic acid fillers usually produce an immediate change, although swelling can obscure the result. Poly-L-lactic acid works progressively over the following weeks rather than providing an immediate settled result.

Recovery varies. Many clients return to routine activities soon afterwards, but bruising and swelling can last longer. Follow your personalised aftercare, including advice about strenuous exercise and temperature extremes during the first 24–48 hours.
