About CryoPen
Cryotherapy
CryoPen/Cryotherapy uses cryogenic technology to treat selected skin imperfections by applying controlled cold directly to the affected area. The cold freezes the targeted tissue, which breaks down as the skin heals.
Depending on assessment, treatment may be considered for skin tags, age spots, sun spots, milia, cherry angiomas and other confirmed benign skin blemishes. The most appropriate removal method depends on the diagnosis and location.
CryoPen is an option for people seeking localised blemish removal without surgical excision. Treatment can be brief, but it is not risk-free or necessarily painless. Your practitioner will discuss discomfort, healing, possible side effects and realistic outcomes before treatment.
The treatment explained
How it Works
Targeted Application of Cryogenic Energy
The CryoPen device applies controlled cold directly to the assessed blemish or skin imperfection. The freezing damages the targeted tissue, which then breaks down as the area heals.
Destruction of the Blemish
Cold temperatures cause the cells within the treated blemish to freeze. The damaged tissue is gradually shed as the skin heals. The response depends on the size, type and location of the lesion.
Care for Surrounding Skin
The cryogenic process is targeted to limit its effect on surrounding skin. However, it cannot guarantee that only the blemish will be affected. Blistering, scarring and lighter or darker patches of skin are possible.
Natural Healing Process
The treated area may form a blister or scab before healing. This commonly takes days to weeks, depending on the site and treatment depth; some areas, particularly the lower legs, can take longer. Follow your practitioner’s aftercare and allow any scab to come away naturally.
Long-Lasting Results
CryoPen can provide lasting removal of some benign blemishes, but clearance after one treatment is not guaranteed. Larger or more persistent lesions may need further treatment, and some lesions can recur.
Assessment comes first
Candidates for
Cryotherapy
CryoPen suitability depends on your skin type, the diagnosis, the treatment area and your medical history. Skin-colour changes are a particular consideration for darker skin tones.
New, changing, bleeding or undiagnosed lesions should be assessed by a GP or dermatologist before cosmetic removal. Cryotherapy should not be used where the diagnosis is uncertain or a tissue sample is needed.
Suitable candidates may:
- Have assessed, benign skin tags, sun spots, age spots or cherry angiomas they would like to remove.
- Be looking for a localised blemish-removal treatment without surgical excision.
- Want to improve the appearance of an unwanted skin blemish.
- Have skin suitable for treatment, without active infection or open wounds in the area.
Your practitioner will confirm whether cryotherapy is appropriate or whether another treatment or medical assessment is needed.

Have a question?
Quick answers to questions you may have
Find out more about the appointment, comfort and healing before your consultation.
How long does the treatment take?
Most appointments last around 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the size and number of blemishes being treated. Assessment may require additional time. Many people return to routine activities afterwards, but you will need to protect the treated area and follow the aftercare instructions.
Is the treatment painful?
You may feel stinging, burning or aching during and after treatment. Discomfort is often brief, but varies with the site and depth of freezing. Local anaesthetic is not usually needed; your practitioner will explain what to expect.
Are there any side effects?
Redness, swelling and blistering can occur. The treated skin may become lighter or darker, sometimes permanently. Scarring and infection are also possible.
Contact the clinic or your GP if pain is worsening, redness is spreading, or the area develops pus or other signs of infection.
When will I see results?
Changes may become visible over days to weeks as the treated blemish crusts, sheds or fades. Healing can take longer in some areas, and additional treatment may be required. Your practitioner will explain the expected healing time and when to review the result.
